“Where words fail, music speaks.” Hans Christian Andersen
Ashdown has a thriving Music Department. It is an integral part of a busy Performing Arts department.
Every pupil in the school receives a weekly music lesson as a class. Our children experience a variety of performing and composing opportunities where the focus is towards practical music-making.
The department also has a team of ten visiting music tutors, offering a wide range of instrumental lessons on a one-to-one basis, offering expertise from each orchestral section. Pupils enjoy progressing with ABRSM grade exams and flourish as musicians.
There is a busy programme of extra-curricular music, including two choirs, an orchestra, string group, woodwind group, brass group, guitar group and rock band. These groups perform in school concerts and give children the invaluable opportunity to work as a team. The whole school comes together each year to perform an entire choral work with a guest orchestra. The Ashdown Choral Day is one of our traditional events in the school calendar and is a true indication of how central music is to the school community.
