Many of our pupils go on to the country's leading senior public schools such as Harrow, Eton, Marlborough, Tudor Hall, Downe House and King's, Canterbury.
In 2019, we were named among the top ten boarding prep schools in the country by website bestprepschools.co.uk. Citing Ashdown House's "Excellent achievement in preparing children for the next stage of their academic journey."
Preparing children not only to get into but crucially, to also be successful at their chosen senior school is an important part of the education that Ashdown House provides. That's why our curriculum focuses not just on traditional learning, but the important life skills they will need to achieve and thrive in the years after they leave Ashdown House. We spend a lot of time building confidence, developing critical thinking skills and encouraging the children to take responsibility for their learning. "Having a go" and not giving up when things get tough are all part of the life skills children develop at our school. More formally, we work hard to develop their exam technique from a young age in a relaxed way so that by the time they reach Common Entrance or Scholarship exams, they are well prepared and not phased by the exam environment.
Our close links with the leading senior schools in the country, both locally and further afield, mean that Ashdown House children are often invited to take part in special education days at senior schools, such as STEM or choral days, as well as to participate in events such as regular Maths challenges. These are much valued by both the children and their families and an important opportunity to not only inspire their current learning but also a chance for them to experience senior school life. As they progress towards the senior years at Ashdown House, the children take part in interview practice sessions with the senior leading team and receive extensive support as they prepare for pre-tests and interviews at their chosen senior schools.
